Planning for a fun RV trip with your family is fairly easy, but the one thing you can’t plan for as you’re pulling out of Arlington, TX, is severe weather. You may encounter hail, thunderstorms or possibly even a tornado; all of which can be terrifying when you’re traveling in your RV. Not only can severe weather happen at any time and in any location, but it can happen quickly. To help ensure your RV trip is safe, Strack Insurance Services has put together a few tips to weather a storm in an RV.
Know Where Local Shelters are Located
Although your RV can provide protection from the elements, in a severe situation, such as a tornado, you’ll want to shelter in a place that is stable and secure. When you arrive at the campsite, it’s important to take a few minutes to get information about local storm shelters. Be sure you know the location and the best route to get there. Remember to talk with your family and have a plan in place in case you have to get to shelter in a way other than by taking your RV.
Have an Emergency Bag Packed
Keep in mind that if you have to leave your RV due to severe weather, you probably will not have much time to gather items you’ll need. So, you should have an emergency bag packed and ready to go. The emergency bag should contain medications you’ll need for a few days, important documents that you brought with you, cell phone chargers, few bottles of water and a change of clothes for each person traveling with you.
Before hitting the road, be sure to research the type of storms that you may encounter as well as the risks for the geographical area in which you’ll be traveling. In many situations, you’ll have at least a few hours’ notice before a severe storm hits, so you should routinely check the weather forecast and if it looks like you could be in for severe storms, be sure to have a backup plan in case you have to take a detour. Being prepared and knowing what to do if you encounter severe weather will allow you to stay safe.
