Is your home winter ready? Although winters in Arlington, TX aren’t usually severe, the temperature and daily weather are different enough from summer that there are things you should do to protect your home. Strack Insurance Services suggests that we take a look.
Protect Your Pipes
It’s true that Texas doesn’t see a lot of cold weather. As a result, homeowners tend to forget that they need to keep an eye on their pipes because though seldom, freezing weather does happen here. To prevent burst pipes, you can do several things:
- detach the garden hose
- wrap exposed pipes with towels affixed with duct tape
- block vents near pipes under the house
Keep Your Foundation Watered
Since much of Texas soil is made of clay, it tends to crack and dry in the summer and contract from changes in moisture levels during the winter. The key to protecting your home’s foundation from getting damaged when the clay contracts, keep the moisture levels consistent year round. You can do this by simply adding a soaker house about a foot and a half from the home’s foundation, or watering the ground about 10 feet away. You don’t want to water the surface of the ground right next to your foundation, which can cause other problems.
Clean the Gutters
Avoiding a Strack Insurance Services homeowners claim in winter can be as simple as cleaning out the gutters. If gutters are clogged with leaves and debris, water from winter storms can’t drain properly, which can cause water damage to the roof. A leaky roof in winter, or worse, large scale damage from rotten wood, can cause major problems for a family that is trying to stay warm. Save yourself the trouble and get the gutters cleared out.
